Laboratory informatics solutions, such as Electronic Laboratory Notebooks (ELNs) and Laboratory Information Systems (LIMS), are essential elements of the modern electronic laboratory that drive process efficiencies, data transparency, timely decision making, and protection of intellectual property. In academia, adoption of these systems in on the rise, but not without key challenges since many well-known solutions were designed with commercial laboratories in mind, e.g., for QC testing. Key cultural and organizational differences exist in academic institutions that drive decisions around funding, timing, adoption, and data access. Such differences translate into higher platform agility requirements that differ from those of their commercial counterparts, who operate on much longer time scales and different success criteria. This panel discussion will explore some of the current challenges, with a focus on how academic institutions are mitigating these issues. Solutions and thinking for next-generation platforms will also be covered, providing valuable feedback to the software vendor community.

About the Speaker Panel

Byron Deane, ‎Manager – Lab IT Solutions, Research Computing Services – University of Massachusetts Medical School

Byron Deane is a Technologist at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) with the Information Technology Department, with a focus on data sciences.  There, Byron has participated in or led a number of efforts to bring new innovation and technologies to the UMMS Research & Laboratory communities. In September of 2015, Byron and his team successfully procured and deployed an Enterprise wide Electronic Lab Notebook (eLN) system solution. Prior to joining UMMS IT, Byron worked at a UMass affiliate UHealthSolutions, Inc. where he served in various roles such as Product Line Director, Client Relations Manager for Massachusetts State Contracts.



Terri Haley, PhD. – Director of Research Information Technology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute 

Dr. Terry Haley is a strategic project facilitator at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in the newly formed Informatics Department and has a broad range of technical experience from bench science to computing infrastructure integration. In his current role, he is leading the efforts in the development of lab data management best practices, research computing sustainability, and the strategic utilization of external cloud service providers for both basic and translational research. 


Bruce Kozuma – Principle Systems Analyst at the Broad Institute

Bruce Kozuma is an IT project\program manager for the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard with experience in software development, operations, IT, computer system validation, and regulatory affairs in industries ranging from manufacturing, telecommunications, biotechnology, and biomedical research.
